Isabel Sanford passed away on July 9, 2004. As Louise “Weezy” Jefferson on The Jeffersons, she made history as the first Black woman to win a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.
REMEMBERING VONETTA MCGEE
Vonetta McGee passed on July 9, 2010. She brought a commanding presence to 1970s Black film, starring in projects like Blacula and inspiring future generations of performers.
ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY
IESHIA EVANS
On July 9, 2016, nurse Ieshia Evans was photographed standing peacefully as she faced arrest during a Baton Rouge protest. The image became a global symbol of dignity and resistance.
A DIFFERENT WORLD FINALE
On July 9, 1993, A Different World aired its final episode after six seasons. The series — a spin‑off from The Cosby Show — reshaped conversations about race, education, and Black identity. Today marks the 31st anniversary of that pivotal finale.
