Born July 10, 1939, Mavis Staples is a Grammy-winning gospel and soul singer, known for her role in The Staple Singers. She has also been a vital voice in the civil rights movement, using her music as a form of resistance and hope. As the last surviving member of the legendary group, she continues to tour and inspire. Happy 86th Birthday to Mavis Staples.

CELEBRATING RACHEL L. SWARNS

Born July 10, 1967, Rachel L. Swarns is an acclaimed journalist, author, and columnist for The New York Times. Her book American Tapestry explores the family history of Michelle Obama and sheds light on American history through a personal lens. Swarns has reported from Cuba, Russia, and southern Africa. Happy 58th Birthday to a storyteller of truth and legacy.

CELEBRATING KEISHA MORRIS

Born July 10, 1974, Keisha Morris is known for her work as an actress and her public profile as the former wife of Tupac Shakur. Though their time together was brief, her story remains part of hip-hop history. Happy 50th Birthday, Keisha Morris.

CELEBRATING JULIEN ALFRED

Julien Alfred, born June 10, 2001, made history at the 2024 Summer Olympics by winning Saint Lucia’s first-ever Olympic medal — a gold in the 100 meters, setting a national record of 10.72 seconds. A proud moment for her country and the Caribbean, her win places her among the fastest women in the world. Though her birthday is June 10, we honor her incredible achievement which continues to make headlines.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO FAUNE CHAMBERS WATKINS

Actress and producer Faune Chambers Watkins married Fonzworth Bentley on July 10, 2010. Known for films like White Chicks, Epic Movie, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, she brings creativity and style to the screen. Today, she and Fonzworth Bentley celebrate 14 years of marriage and family life together. Happy Anniversary!


TRAILBLAZERS IN HISTORY

HONORING MARY MCLEOD BETHUNE

Born July 10, 1875, Mary McLeod Bethune was a legendary educator, political advisor, and civil rights leader. Founder of Bethune-Cookman University and the National Council of Negro Women, she was one of the most influential Black women of the 20th century and an advisor to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Her legacy lives on through education, advocacy, and leadership.

CELEBRATING MARCIA ANN GILLESPIE

Born July 10, 1944, Marcia Ann Gillespie made her mark in media as the editor-in-chief of both Essence and Ms. magazines. Her powerful voice shaped conversations around race, gender, and justice. She is also the co-author of Maya Angelou: A Glorious Celebration. Happy 80th Birthday to a pioneer in publishing and activism.
