Artist Barbara Jones-Hogu: Art With a Message

Brooklyn Museum

Barbara Jones-Hogu was an artist, activist, and co-founder of the African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists (AfriCOBRA). She was known for creating bold posters and prints with bright “cool-ade” colors and strong words that shared messages of pride, unity, and self-determination.

Her artwork was shown in museums and used in community spaces, schools, and movements, because she believed art should be seen and understood by everyday people.

“We wanted to speak directly to the people.”
